Learning to Love Our Cities Together

During the last week of October Teddy, CMT’s Executive Director, and I had the opportunity to be in Grand Rapids with a group of people from around the world. We were together as a part of a global network of trainers who make up the Urban Training Collaborative. We develop incarnational leaders who love their city and seek its peace. The Urban Training Collaborative is an initiative of Street Psalms that serves the networks of Resonate Global Mission (an agency of the Christian Reformed Church of North America) and Leadership Foundations. This network represents nearly 100 cities. Each year we gather in a different city throughout the network to ...

Working Towards Peace

During the last weekend of September the staff of CMT had the opportunity to meet with the members of the InnerChange team. As some of you may know, InnerChange is an order of missionaries among the poor. We have been gathering as an extended family for the last year and ahalf, and every time we have felt God’s calling to work for the peace of our cities. During the last gathering we had to focus intensely on the Gospel’s non-violence as we sensed the need to develop a spirituality of non-violence resistance to the different powers that be in the cities of Quetzaltenango and Guatemala. We started our time together walking the streets of ...

Vision Trips of 2017

This year, we have received a total of nine vision trips. Each group has been unique. We have worked with people from distinct backgrounds and paths of life. The first group we had was different from what we are used to at CTM. Our friend, Jeremiah Griswold, brought a group of tattoo artists from Cincinnati, OH who worked tirelessly to cover the tattoos of people who have left behind lives of crime and poverty. During April, we received a group of Masters degree students from Seattle School of Theology and Psychology, and in May a group of undergraduate students from Kuyper College in Michigan. Each of these experiences brought profound learning not ...

New Learning Communities

At CMT Guatemala we are committed to develop incarnational leaders through all of our training programs. These leaders become a more conscious part of the social and spiritual renewal of their city. For this reason, we provide incarnational training, inspiration, and organizational structure for an urban collective transformation. Over the last few years other people from different academic institutions have seen and shared our commitment to developing incarnational leaders. One of these organizations is the Community for Theological Interdisciplinary Studies (CETI by its initials in Spanish), which is based out of Costa Rica with influence all ...

First Round of Vision Trips

During the last two months CMT Guatemala has hosted three vision trips. Each one of the groups that came could not have been more different from each other. The first vision trip, which happen two weeks before ester, was a father and son type of experience. The group came from Tacoma, Washington. We had three dads with their boys trying to call forth new ways of experiencing God and the father and son relationship. We learned from each other and healed together as we understood that we are children of God, and that God is very well pleased with who we are. The second group also came from the Pacific North West. My friend Ron Ruthruff came with a ...

Healing Together

Kathleen O’Connor once said, “The first condition for healing is to bring the pain and suffering into view.” At CMT Guatemala we believe it is through remembering that we heal. It is through bringing our pain to sight that we start the process of reconstructing our broken selves. One of the ways that CMT ministers to Guatemala City is through what we call “ministry of memory.” We walk our city visiting the different places that have marked our history with sorrow and lament. We bring our suffering to the surface in order to heal. During the last weekend of February CMT's staff had the blessing to practice the ministry of memory with the ...

Trainings for 2017

At CMT we provide incarnational training, inspiration, and organizational structure towards a collective urban transformation. For that reason, we are very excited to start a series of different trainings that are aimed to equip grassroots leaders in Guatemala City. This year we are launching three different training initiatives. The first one is a certificate program in civic leadership and community development. In this training we want to develop leaders with the capacity to build relationships, mobilize their communities, and create sustainable development projects. The second course we are offering is in theology and organizational developme...

Tattooing Our Souls

During January 12-15, CMT staff had the opportunity to experience grace, redemption and love in a very different way. We served with the Cincinnati White Whale Tattoo crew. During four days of intense work we walked together while serving people whose tattoos reminded them of the things they did in their past, or people whose first step out of a criminal life was covering a previous tattoo. The stories we heard while the artists were tattooing were amazing. Luis stepped out of his criminal life years ago, but the tattoos he had served as a reminder of his past and a barrier to freely moving around the city to sell the pastries and candies he makes. ...

A New Year With New Opportunities

CMT is the kind of organization that takes pride in being very flexible and organic. It is important, however, to understand that this does not mean that we don’t value planning. At the end of 2016 the leadership development team sat down to sketch what 2017 would look like. And, to be honest, it is simultaneously scary and exciting to see the dreams we want to accomplish this year. We have prepared two series of trainings that will equip more leaders around Guatemala City. The first one is a certificate in civic leadership and community development. During this training Guatemalan leaders will have the opportunity to grow and learn to work with ...

Urban Training Collaborative 2016

During the last ten years, since the beginning of CMT, we have been connected to a larger international network of urban leaders. The Urban Training Collaborative is a network of organizations that train grassroots leaders in different cities around the world. The common objective that unites all of us in the UTC network is to train urban leaders to be incarnational agents of transformation in their cities. A couple months ago, during the month of October, CMT had the chance to gather with men and women from cities from around the world, The United States, The Dominican Republic, Haiti, Kenya, India, Cambodia, South Africa, Guatemala, El ...
